I think the official version was that the latch bolts broke because of
their poor condition - lack of maintenance and so on. Did I ever tell you
guys that I was called up that night because I am (or was) a hobbyist diver
and member of a volunteer group for rescue operations? There I was, in the
pier, waiting to get on a helicopter and jump in the water to help people,
but I never got to go. There were so few survivors that I was not needed.
Damn scary, pitch black, very high wind, cold as heck and nobody really
knew what was going on.
