I don't think "Hunchback" is really meant to be a love story, unlike many
of the more recent films ("Pocahontas," "Beauty and the Beast," etc.)
(And I'm certain he didn't get the girl in Hugo's version. ;)) Why not?
Well, in the movie, I think he was actually supposed to be on the young
side, maybe 20, and I just got the impression that everyone else was a bit
older than he. I perceived him as having more of a crush on Esmerelda.
Being locked upstairs for so long sort of stunted his social adeptness.
