Ah, but there lies the important part: to me, my beliefs are not all that
is important. Maybe it's the definition of "beliefs" that I have
got wrong?

I think it could be what the word "belief" means to us that is
different. I'd fight to death for my family, probably friends and their
families as well. I'd also be willing to fight for many many other humans,
but not really for beliefs. To me, what I believe in means not much.
