Yes, let's talk about employment -- and Magoo. I don't know your age, so you
may not be old enough to remember Magoo. I am. So are the executives in
their 40's and 50's who are making lots of hiring and promotion decisions.
Magoo reenforces all the sterotypes and misconceptions about blindness,
expecially that blind people are out-of-touch and not too smart. That bears
directly on someone's attitude toward hiring blind people.
Employment does not exit in a vacum. You can't work on employment without
dealing with the underlying attitudes employers have. You are kidding
yourself if you think you can.
So, ignore Magoo at your own peril. And if you really think it a problem
only for "partials," then you really haven't considered the attitudes of
employers.
