One of the most exciting and challenging aspects of aging is the
increasing numbers of individuals with pre-existing disabilities surviving
into old age. Many of these individuals are among the first generation of
people with disabilities to survive and experience aging with a disability.
Gerontology curricula for health science and social work students
and professionals have not kept pace with these dramatic changes. Most
curricula in gerontology address the physical, mental and sensory
impairments that occur as an outcome of aging but do not address the
impact of aging with a pre-existing disability. We are currently involved
in a project to develop:
1) A comprehensive bibliographic database of literature and audio-visual
resources related to the experience of aging with a pre-existing disability;
2) A curriculum monograph that describes objectives, formats, and
curriculum strategies in the area of aging with disability.
We are interested in collecting any information on "Aging with a
Pre-Existing Disability". If you are working in this area or have
information on this topic please contact:
