PE>PE> They're NOT running them at mismatched baud rates. THAT's what

PE>PM> No doubt your dumb terminal

PE>I'm not "ignoring" it at all. I'm choosing to not switch
on "Variable
PE>Speed".

PM> Well perhaps you should >chose< a locked baud and be done with it!

I will be dropping down from 57600 before too long, in an attempt
to see if that has a bearing on the Zmodem errors I see occasionally
on EC connects. Since I have a decent modem, I only need change
the software, autobaud does the rest. I'm not even sure what
speed I did the last AT&W at on the Netcomm, I think it was 57600
though, but I don't actually care (I don't need to care, I've got
a modem that autobauds properly).

PE>Why are you introducing this red herring? My concern is about NORMAL
PE>locked comm port with AUTOBAUD. E.g. I can pick up my Netcomm M34F,
PE>and take it to ANY of 70 different WYSE terminals, type in "ATZ", and
PE>they will all autobaud on whatever the WYSE terminal is set up for,
PE>and WORK. Straight out of the box! BFN. Paul.

PM> Well I won't try and guess what you really want to use your modem for,

Actually I use it on a BBS only at the moment, but I occasionally
change my locked baud rate, and would like the modem to figure out
my new locked baud rate for itself, instead of me having to
explicitly tell the stupid machine what it is. Autobaud is not
some new invention.

PM> but if you regularly use your modem on some large number of dumb
PM> terminals of differing DTE rates, then perhaps the USR is not the right
PM> choice for you. (but I would imagine ANY high speed modem would be wasted
PM> on a dumb terminal anyway!) CYA Peter.

What would you use on a dumb terminal? Until about 2 months ago,
I was using a WYSE terminal at work, communicating at 19200 bps.
I would increase the rate to 57600 if the terminal server could
handle it, in which case a V.34 modem using V.42bis compression
would work quite nicely. I could work from home with no loss of
speed. BFN. Paul.
