Hi Ian,
It seems that when I think all is right it is not quite. I now have this modem
working really well for data progs however Fax is not so good. I have tried
just about everything. I will now take you up on your offer of help. The
details as I know them are below:-

Modem = Spirit SMI (No other info)
        Fax Mgr = Winfax Lite

The Modem s/ware loads instructions transparently as the FaxMgr is
called. (or is supposed to) This appears to be working correctly.
It certainly does in 2 data progs I currently have installed
(they work OK, 1 is windows other Dos).
In WinFax I have a few options to use:

Digicom Scout Plus (v.32 internal fax/data)
                 - will not initialize

Generic Class 1 h/ware flow contrl
                 - will not initialize

Generic Class 1 s/ware flow control
                 - will not initialize

                Generic Class 1 data/fax send/receive
                 - will not initialize

                Digicom 9624PC+
                 - initializes, dials, sends carrier, hears carrier but does
                   not lock.

(I use Digicom because this is the only thing I know for
sure about the manufacturer and there is no Spirit option)

All of this would seem perfectly normal for trying to sort out these
problems, except that Winfax Lite is the program supplied and the
s/ware sets up for. Itworks some times and apparently to some modems.

The last one I tried was Austel line test ring back line - it would not
lock, I don't think that there would be anything wrong with their
        system.

I did send a fax to register Winfax - that worked Ok

The original problem with data seems to be as I described in the other online
message all that seem Ok now

I would appreciate any help you can give in this matter

I know I will never buy another of these s/ware controlled modems

Regards Garry
