Please give the exact command you are using. I've tested this and it works
fine for me. The syntax is of the form:
Winword /t templatename
Perhaps you were using
Winword templatename /t
which is incorrect

are creating a new document from the template and should use the autonew
macro stored in the template.
I may have misinterpreted your description, but it sounds like you are
attempting to open the template as a document, which is an incorrect use of
templates.
