Perhaps... I'm just getting into the handicapping thing...
However, I think that what does seem to happen is that each
extreme in wind throws a reasonable mean wind out of the
picture on both ends. IOW, if the wind varies too far in
any leg of the race during the race, different boats make
or lose more distance than others.
As 4 races were held, and finishing order based on the
displacement was the key, I think it worked out for the
best. The top finishers of the "light" and "heavy"
each headed their class. But, as I mentioned, even with
normal PHRF corrections, none of the "heavy" boats would
have gotten a trophy.
To me, it's not the trophy so much as the participation,
though a 1st Place does always look well...
