The earth's magnetic poles have reversed some 300 times, now. The
average interval between reversals is 700,000 years but it varies from
100,000 to tens of millions.  The last one was 780,000 years but no
one knows when it will happen again.  Probably no big deal.  Certainly
nothing unusual.

The continental plates are in constant motion.  Some are spreading
apart, others are crashing into each other.  This has been going on
for billions of years.  Again, nothing unusual.

None of these phenomena represent things "going backwards".  It is
just "change, as usual".
