Dave, first question is were are you located?  If you can link up with some
local ATMs that may help.  A spherometer is not as Zen-like, but tends to
be pretty accurate.

To make an F/8 into an F/6, ya, you want #60 grit (or 46-70 the course
stuff they sell in rock shops).  The bad news is you have to go back to the
beginning, the good news it will go a lot faster the second time.

If the edge isn't to bad, you may be able to polish it out.  If the edge is
left from the grinding process, you will probably have to grind it out.  In
that case you can use your finest grit and check the progress.
