My response was probably somewhat of a non sequitur.  I'm assuming David
found Thurmond's stand on race so repuslive that that's why he responded
the way he did.  Yes, I think you have a point that one should not
"gloat" over another's death (however  long the life), but the
death of Thurmond probably symbolizes to some the passing of a very ugly
chapter in American culture and race relations.

I found Thurmond's stand on race, his Dixiecrat party association, very
ugly.  I also have to admit that to his credit he apparently became far
less racist as he aged...I think his senate staff was fairly diverse in his
last years in the senate.

Having said that, I think that this country's racism (slavery, the civil
war, the lynchings) has been the uglist chapter in our country's book.
