That's complete nonsense. Britain supported the South during the Civil War
and had to run Northern blockaders to keep the cotton imports coming in to
feed its cotton mills. After the war you could no longer get sufficient
cotton from the US and so took over Egypt to change its farm economy to
producing a cash crop, cotton, wrecking its economy in the process.
