From: "Dave Ings"
I'm not aware of any such movement of significance. There is definitely
talk about proportional representation, but that's hardly an American
model. Premier Ralph Klein yaps about an elected Senate - there's an
"elected Senator" on deck from Alberta - but many or most
Canadians not of the political or partisan classes would just prefer to get
rid of the damn thing. And a few fringe conservatives who are trying to get
hot button American issues into play in Canada yap about Supreme Court
confirmation hearings.
At least one of the "inadequacies" of the Parliamentary system is
in fact one of its strengths: in normal circumstances it provides a series
of "rotating dictatorships" which has the considerable advantage
that you can actually get things done effectively, unlike the by-design
gridlock system the US has.
Given the seemingly pervasive anti-American reflex amongst left wing and
centrist politicians in Canada (which I decry BTW) I would be very
surprised to see any political reforms proposed which could be directly
attributed to the American model. Many Canadians (like me) think that
adopting a US style Charter of Rights was the single biggest Americanizing
influence on Canadian culture in recent decades, be it good or bad, as
Canadian courts learn how to be activist in the American tradition.
