Unfortunately, my wife and I would like to retain our current number.
Our current number (049) 58 xxxx is on the old type where the digital
 starts (049) 50 xxxx.

If I cannot get the old line "fixed-up" I would prefer to keep it and
get a second line line for the computer, but unfortunately I think $173
is a bit steep (and I can't afford it) to install a second line when
there is no digging and hard work to be done as they will only use the
second pair that is in the house. The cost is still the same as a new line.

I have no idea how long I would have to wait for our existing number to be
 converted to digital.

It is definately the line that is inadequate. I tested it at work
yesterday dragging the whole system there and through a PABX line
it connected 26400/ARQ a couple of times first go.

At home it does not even retrain all the time to the best connect as I have
it on autodetect. It just goes on 28800 or 26400 and spits the dummy when a
whole lot of grabage gets thrown up.

 Regards
 John
