Several BBS software packages have built-in email servers: WINServer,
Synchronet, AdeptXBBS (OS/2), etc.  It's also easy to interface without
using a gateway (in the traditional sense) to a mail server-I have a
program that directly reads the Squish message bases in my system and
converts them to RFC-compliant messages to send out.  I don't have any
reason to do so at this time, though.
