<< My idea of an enlightened global super civilization taking charge of the
biosphere includes setting aside huge chunks of the planet where
nature can be left alone to follow its "natural path." This will be a
civilization which has put a brake on its own chaotic breeding and
destruction of nature. So your nightmare scenario is not what I'm
proposing here. However, we will also be bioengineering existing
animals and even creating new types of life. But we will understand
that we can't control and anticipate everything, so we will allow nature
to do her thing as well as much as possible.

This I agree with. I've even written in one of my sci-fi story ideas about a
future society that has cities connected by corridors - with the rest of the
world outside the city/corridors,and left pretty much alone.
(PS my new self published short sci-fi novel is now out called Library Planet -
but that entire planet is books!
