        It turned out that it was the ATI Video Card that was the
problem.  Apparently QmPro poles all the COM Ports, not only the one you
are using for your modem, and this was screwing up the ATI video card.
For $50 dollars I switched to a Diamond Stealth and everything works
fine now.  Thanks for your comments....
