On the DPX596:

"S34  Error Correction Timeout:  Determines the length of time (.1 to
25.5 seconds) the answering modem looks for Error Correction initiation
poll from the originating modem.  If no Error Correction initiation poll is
received within the defined time limit, the modem operates in normal mode
or disconnects the call (depending on &E setting)."

The AT&F default is 50 (5 seconds).  I've run with it set to 60 (6
seconds) since seeing the problem you describe occur early on ('91), with
some modems.  I don't recall having seen it happen since, and of course
that settings's only the upper limit; most modems will sort E/C out much
more quickly.
