I don't think international calls via Optus go through Telstra's
international gateway's echo cancellers.

Anyway, you should try dialing the Telstra override then 0011 for
international modem calls. You may be pleasantly surprised:

9600 bps / V.34 when the Signal to Noise ratio was 18 dB.

V.32bis would not connect under such conditions unless you forced 4800 bps I believe.
Have any Netcomm V.34 modem owners experienced improvements in
international call quality via Telstra?
