Interesting theory, Ed, but that would completely change the stat of
ERA (unless a new catagory was used). For rating relievers (actually
all pitchers, but it would more show 'effective' relievers), I would
like to see RWP, Runs While Pitching. Toss out earned versus unearned
runs, average out how many runs were scored while the pitcher was on
the mound into a nine inning game. I suspect there are number of top
level relievers that would lose out on that stat, and starters may or
may not have better RWP than ERA, depending on the relievers and the
unearned runs.
