The above is familiar, but remind me where where I've seen it before and
where to find it. An object inspector/editor such as Object Desktop or
Herwig B's? 

I used your next suggestion instead.

Excellent alternative to restoring an earlier desktop: just reach back
and copy a part that functions properly. 

How do I make the original Startup folder deletable, now that I have
emptied it?
