Guy -- It sounds like what you have is a TV projectION lens.  These lenses
are very fast so as to get maximum brightness on a screen.  They are
probably corrected for coma and astigmatism and not much else.  They are
also designed for finite conjugates not infinity.  The plastic element(s)
are molded aspherics.
