TNR - The New Republic

You are correct about the writing style. Along with it being a page turner,
the short chapters make it a chapter turner.

Crichton is trying to get a point - actually 5 points - across with this
book as he states in The Author's Note at the back of the book. His
position on each point is expanded

1. Stop patenting genes
2. Establish clear guidelines for the use of human tissues 3. Pass laws to
ensure that data about gene testing is made public 4. Avoid bans on
research
5.Rescind the Bayh-Dole Act which allowed university researchers to sell
their discoveries for their own profit even when the research was funded by
taxpayer money

TNR? Times New Roman?

I like Crichton's style: cardboard characters, thin plot and an economy of
writing that makes every book a page turner. I've read most of his books
and find that half-way through he runs out of plot so whatever happened in
the previous 10 pages is repeated with variations four times and then the
plot gets resolved, things wrap and everybody goes home.

As for "Next" ... this was the first I'd heard of it so I
promptly went to the library site and put a hold on it. Sixty-three others
had heard of it before I read your comment. Do, please, try to be more
timely -- some of us *depend* on fellow Homeless/Barkto/Canopians for
timely guidance and assistance! ;-)
