Really? The old metal 14400 I once had was as bog standard as you could
get. Still, it was better than some other bog standard 14.4s of that age
because I had the world class model, or should've been better. Now that I
remember properly I don't think it made any difference (just v.23 I think).
Did they have country code support anyone (AT*NCx)?

Supra do spend quite a lot of time on theirs; for a start they have the
groovy LED matrix to handle, along with their other technology like
SilentAnswer, etc.
