I caught a 3-buck-cover Blues show in Royal Oak tonight. The Smokin' Joe
Kubek Band - featuring Bnois King. I stayed for the long first set and
then bagged (had surgery Tues., but I wasn't going to miss this).
Joe played a Lake Placid Blue small-headstock Strat and 2 LP's--a green
one and a Goldtop that went haywire halfway thru the set. Bnois played a
cherry red 335. I saw when I went up to the stage after the set that it
had a bound body and block markers and a lot of arm wear--didn't ask what
year. Both guys' main amps were Twin Reverbs, Joe's a blackface and
Bnois's a silverface. One tune had heavy Leslie-osity going on, but I
didn't see a big L cab anywhere.
Glad I caught this show. I missed Joanna Connor last year at this same
venue--she would've been another Beeg Bargain. She plays great Blues on
her LP. Sat at the bar and could see fine. My left ear is just now
coming back on-line.
