subject: Modem not hanging up. co

Following up a message from LAIRD KELLY to DAVID HAYS:
DH> DH> I run FD 2.12. My SupraFaxModem 28.8 external with the upgraded
DH> DH> datapump and the -22 ROM version has started to act weird. Often,
DH> DH> when the modem dials out and gets a busy signal it won't drop
DH> DH> carrier. The 'OH' light on the modem display goes off the line
DH> DH> remains open. Manually sending the onhook command doesn't work
I use the -18 code and experienced similar problems with a few differences:
the modem would report that the phone is on-hook and the OK would display,
but the line would still be physically off-hook! I would kow this because
the Bell lady recording would come on, then the loud "off-hook" warning tones
from Bell would occur.
DH>When my SupraFaxModem 28.8 is hooked up to my BBS line, it will not
DH>disconnect the line when either dropping DTR or sending the ATH0 string.
DH>The SupraSonic worked fine. The SupraFaxModem failed to disconnect
DH>the line
DH>on every test with the BBS line, and did just fine on the voice line. I
DH>tested it using both comm ports to make sure it wasn't a port related
DH>problem.
 LK> I don't know whether the SupraFaxModem 28.8 has a solid-state relay
LK> or a reed relay but it sounds like it is failing due to excessive
LK> line current (reed relays are prone to "stick" when the reeds
LK> become magnetised due to excessive current and semi-conductor
LK> junctions "breakdown" (and may eventually melt causing a
LK> short-circuit) if subjected to excessive current)
I am not sure why this is happening, but the problem seems to correct itself
after a few minutes. But there is no other indication that there is a
problem unless one actually lifts the phone that is physically connected to
the modem's phone jack. Therefore.. this problem may be happening to more
28.8k owners than they realize.
