I do like the JR. alot, but don't think it could be my only amp.
Even with an active pre-amp in my guitars that pushes it hard, it still has 
kind of a "shallow grind to it. It's defiantly not as smooth or creamy 
sounding as my blackface Bassman, or definatly not like my plexi, but it 
still is pretty damn acceptable.
I'm just curious if witeither Rubies or perhaps Groove Tubes migh help to 
"Mush" the distortion out a bit...
I looked thru the schmatic and didn't find an adjustable bias pot, but like 
you said, being biased a bit cold is precisely why it sounds the way it does. 
I think if I biased it pretty hot, almost on the edge of runaway, it would 
deliver an increadable tone..
