RR> Hello, all. I was just wondering if there are any glider flyers
RR> around this echo. Let's hear from you and what you're flying or
RR> building.
Hi Rodney. I got my first RC glider, a 2 meter Thunder Tiger
Winstar in November 94 and flew it 5 or 10 flights from the top
of a 50' hill before crashing and breaking the wing. I finally got
around to fixing it in May 95 and flew it once or twice a week
until about October when I broke the wing again. By then it was
pretty beat up from many crashes and repairs and not worth a lot
of fixing. That hill is great for slope soaring but the wind is
gusty and crashes are frequent. I replaced that glider with a
Corndogger (see http://schoneal.com/netads/com/cabdesigns/) which
is a nice little HLG. It's a fiberglass pod-rod configuration with
a foam core/fiberglass sheeted wing. It flies well in light lift
(5 mph on the hill) but goes fast enough to survive when the wind
is 20-30. I also converted one of those $5 styrofoam toy gliders
to RC and it flies OK but needs reduced drag. Improvements are
underway.
RR> Any good contests around?
I don't know much about contests. Thermals don't turn me on much
but pylon racing might be fun.
RR> Rodney "the Lead thumb flyer"
My fellow fliers haven't nicknamed me yet but "Spin-in" would
probably be appropriate.
