KR> What is the meaning of /bis/ in protocols such as V.32bis?
KR> If V.22 means 1200bps, V.22bis means 2400bps, and V.32 means 9600bps,
KR> does this mean V.32bis should really be 19200 and not 14400?
Hello again Kris,
The "bis" is short for some French word which means second
version. The V.?? part is, of course, the original standard.
The numbering scheme is totally un-related to anything of
significance to us. My 2400 V.22bis modem can also perform using V.42 but
can't do V.32.
KR> Who was responsible for developing and releasing
the V.fc standard?
Can't answer that one.
KR> Why is 33000bps referred to as V.34+ and not V.34bis?
This one is not official, it is simply meant to indicate that it
can do V.34 and a bit more.
KR> I'd appreciate any comments on these questions.
May I suggest that you look around the boards for some of the many
text files available. These are often in the form of "FAQ" files, which
stands for Frequently Asked Questions. There is a lot of very interesting
stuff around, including the history of modems, etc.
Have fun.
John
