I have used a glass tool on a mirror grinding machine (not Mirror-O-
Matic). The glass tool wore as fast as the mirror blank I was grinding.
Then I got a solid aluminum tool from Jack Schmidling. (I do not think he
makes them any more...too bad.) I was able to use the same aluminum tool
to grind twelve, repeat twelve, mirror blanks...from 80 grit to fine
grinding.
I recommend your friend use an aluminum tool. If he can't buy/find/make a
solid alu. tool, then make a dental stone tool, cut 1/4 inch aluminum into
squares and 'tile' your tool with JB Weld epoxy and the alu. squares. It
will last a long time.
NOTE: Make this tool to the desired curvature of your mirror.
Hope this helps,
