TG>So guy tells me I can catch beavers with just a pointed stick.
TG>I thought this guy was crazy. I asked him about using a gun. He said
TG>a shotgun is good but the barrel gets clogged with dirt (?).
TG>He says its good to pick a secluded area, because people dont like
TG>to look outside and see a guy catching beavers in his front yard.
TG>Well, needless to say, I put 10 pointed sticks in my backyard and so
TG>far, no results.
TG>I just dont understand. Maybe the pointed stick needs to be up?
TG>When I see him again I'll ask. I'll ask him about that bear too. But
TG>until then, I'll inquire here.
TG>Any suggestions on how one catches beavers with just a pointed stick?
The indians used to catch beaver by taking a flexible stick and
splitting the end, wedging it with a sliver of wood, and wrapping a few
fibers just below the sliver. They would poke this up into the entrance
of the beaver lodge and feel around with it. When they encountered a
beaver, they'd twist the stick -- the beaver's fur and loose skin would
be caught in the cleft and he could be pulled out.
I suspect this is like the Chimpanzees using a stalk of grass to catch
termites -- they seem to have no trouble doing it, but all the research
workers who've watched them do it say THEY can't duplicate it. :-)
