WL>Being painted unflatteringly by history would be as painful
WL>to Clinton as impeachment, trial and conviction on the
WL>Lewinsky-related obstruction and perjury charges; he has
WL>an all-consuming need to be loved by "the people", and
WL>being forced to resign in disgrace would crush him. (Unlike
WL>Nixon, Clinton is personally involved with both the original
WL>offenses and the coverup attempts.)
WL>Sure, we could add to his disgrace with impeachment, but I
WL>doubt he would really suffer any more. In fact, he'd probably
WL>be able to rationalize that "the people didn't do this, the
WL>Republicans did." But impeachment, trial by the Senate,
WL>removal from office and the civil and criminal actions to
WL>follow would continue to keep this entire matter (and the
WL>debate over it) going for years to come.
WL>The sweetest outcome I can envision would be for Bill to
WL>resign, Hillary to divorce him, various prosecutors to take
WL>_her_ to court until whatever money she has hidden away is
WL>gone, and Chelsea to marry some nice Young Republican from
WL>conservative Orange County, CA. (Does Bob Dornan have any
WL>unmarried sons...or grandsons...around her age?)
WL>If Hillary winds up in jail, so much the better -- but being
WL>broke and without her powerbase (Bill) would be punishment
WL>enough to satisfy me. As for Bill, I have a feeling that he
WL>has little or no money stashed away *in his own name*; without
WL>Hillary and/or Chelsea to get it for him, whatever he's
WL>deposited offshore in their names will remain out of his reach.

WL>I don't disagree with this; but forcing a resignation is
WL>quite possible, while actually securing an impeachment by the
WL>House and conviction in a trial by the Senate is extremely
WL>iffy. A failed impeachment attempt _might_ leave Clinton
WL>politically disgraced -- or it might merely make his supporters
WL>that much more vocal and determined.

WL>The timing is rather suspicious -- L'affaire Lewinski stole
WL>the spotlight from all previous Clinton scandals, and now
WL>Trie's return is taking back the headlines after the public's
WL>interest has cooled. But if Trie can be tied to any of
WL>Starr's loose threads (right now, only Reno has an
WL>investigation going), *and* if he provides damaging testimony,
WL>then I may change my mind about the success of an impeachment
WL>attempt.
RP> On a related note, I also think the execution of Carla Fay Tucker
RP> the right and proper thing to do. The judgement is just, and
RP> forgiveness is not the state's to give. If her conversion is real
RP> then I rejoice for her sake, for she looks forward to the fulfillm
RP> of the kind of promise Christ made to the repentant robber who hun
RP> beside Him on a cross of his own - "Today shalt thou be with me in
 RP> paradise." (Luke 23:43).
WL>Absolute total agreement here.
My my Walter, a bit vindictive aren't you? Kidding. I totally agree it
would be Divine Retribution. And poetic justice.
As for the execution of Ms. Tucker, I also agree. There's another woman on
death row in Texas who's saying she should be spared because she's lost her
two children. If you ask how she lost them, the answer would explain why
she is ON death row to begin with. She brutally stabbed them to death.
Kind of like the Menendez brothers asking for mercy from the court claiming
they were orphans after they killed their parents.
