Aaron,
Most likely you'll receive a number of responses to this but, I'll add my
two cents worth also.
Two things you should do before purchasing a trainer. First, contact the
local club and get with whomever is going to teach you to fly. They may
prefer a particular plane to train with. If so, then get that one. Reason
is the instructor will be familiar with the type which goes a long way
towards training. Also they will know the little quirks the type may have
and where to change things in the kit to make it a better plane and other
things like that. If you bring them a plane they have never seen before
then they are as much in the dark about it as you are and it may prove to be
unsuitable for training.
Second, in the event you don't get with an instructor then here are some
guidlines for selecting a good trainer:
Pick one that requires at least a .40 size engine, bigger if you can afford
it. The bigger the plane the easier it is to see and the easier it will be
for you to learn on.
The plane should be of the cabin type with a high wing of a flat bottom or
semi-symetrical airfoil. The wing should also have dihedral (that upward
bend of the two wing halves).
The plane should have a steerable nose wheel and I prefer the main gear to
be of the bent aluminum variety as opposed to the bent wire type. I find
the aluminum takes the training landings much better. Any trainer with the
wire type of main gear can easily be converted during building.
That is pretty much it for selcting a trainer. Whatever you do, don't let
the local hobby shop sell you something you don't want. There are some out
there that will. Nor let them try to tell you you don't need a trainer.
Above all, the most important thing is to get with an instructor and follow
their advice. If you have any questions feel free to ask here. TTYL
