i can completely understand john dobson's objective:

getting as many people as possible an opportunity to own a scope that can
send them down a lifetime path of enjoying the sky and potentially
infecting others.

perfection is not required for that. affordable, stable and adequate are
more useful descriptors.

once on the path many will chose to upgrade and perhaps pass along their
original. i doubt that anything so made by hand would ever see the
junkyard, rather several generation of amazed owners.
