Actually it can.. as long as the remote modem cooperates. When the remote
caller calls in, they have to add tha caret "^" to their dial string to cause
the modem to make the call init tone. It sounds kinda like a fax tone, but
it is at a different frequency so thus the modem can identify it as data. On
the Supra, this is known as "Silent Answer Plus".
