Well, you don't need to be in my debt, but I have the answer to your 
problems.  I played with my sister's Biostar 586 motherboard.  The ram chips 
have to be a 16 and an 8 meg chip.  Each in a different bank.
e.g.
BANK 0         BANK 1
|16 MEG|EMPTY||8 MEG|EMPTY|
