That's one of the amazing things about whole medicinal herbs
as opposed to synthetics or extracts of only a specific chemical
in a plant -- the whole herb often contains other substances that
prevent the undesireable side effects that can come with
synthetics or using only one of the chemicals in the herb.
Of course, many herbs often don't (and some do) act as quickly as
"modern" drugs upon acute conditions, but they are gentler.  On the
other hand, taking tonic herbs that help prevent acute problems
often avoids the need for quick fixes.
