there are tens of millions more who are insured. And those insured people
also vote, politicians know that, and those insured people aren't interested
in seeing our taxes go up.

You mean the people "that have no health _insurance_", not that have no
health _care_. There's a big difference.
The local hospitals in Greensboro, NC (where I practice law) do a small
fortune worth of de facto freebie care. People just default on the bills,
and they're rarely recovered. That means that there is a very large no-cost
care system for the working poor.
