| subject: | Laptop Upgrade? |
Hey, did ya hear the news? David Masters was caught in one of
the holosuites giving The Doctor a "Laptop Upgrade?"
WOOHOO!!! I've been wanting a PII/366 MMC cartridge to put in
my Toshiba 4025CDT. ]:>
>>>Is it worth it trying to upgrade the video card on a laptop? Is it even
>>>possible?
>>They are pretty hard wired. What laptop are you playing with?
DM>A 4 year old Toshiba Satellite Pro 490CDT. My sister and nephew are here
DM>for a couple of weeks, and he's got a couple of games he wants installed.
DM>We tried, and it seemed to install fine, but when we ran it half the
DM>graphics were missing or obscured. We checked the readme, and it gives a
DM>list of video cards it supports... it lists two different types of S3
DM>Virge, but not the S3 Virge MX, which is what is in the machine.
It might not be the card as much as the resolution the display is set at.
The C&T chipset in mine will do 1280 but the lcd is only 1024. If I set
the display to 1280 then I only get part of picture and half to use the
mouse to scroll the virtual screen around to display other parts.
DM>We're not really going to worry about it - just thought I'd toss it out
DM>there and see what happened.
Upgrading a laptop beyond whatever is listed in the specs depends on
just how much money you want to spend and how *little* sanity you possess.
The 4025 for ex. only has a 24x cdr. My 4025 otoh now has a swappable
bay where the cd goes and at this particular moment has a 4x4x24x cdrw
installed.
As above the 300mhz cpu is in a removable, 280pin cartridge and while
that's not on toshiba's listed upgrade anymore than the cdrw is, recall
what I said abt sanity. ];>

The Doctor
