That has nothing to do with the problem I have. It only switches the display 
of symlinks on or off. And I agree that only showing the 8.3 names is at least 
not very friendly. What do you get when you get LILY~9FC.BZ2 for example? I 
could not guess that it would be lilypond-2.8.2-1.documentation.tar.bz2 :)
The only reason for the problem is that ProFTP jailes users to their home 
directories and that symlinks are resolved relative to this directory. So when 
user anonymous logs in via ftp, he will be in the anonymous ftp users' home 
directory, in my case /FTP, and a symlink like /home/ftp/pub/something will be 
resolved to /FTP/home/ftp/pub/something, which doesn't exist.

I don't remember why I started using ProFTP. Maybe I heard good things about 
it. I will look into vsftp some time. But not yet, I've got other things on my 
mind at the moment.
