-=> AUGUST ABOLINS wrote to ALL <=- AA> A friend of mine has a Mac that says has a problem with the "e" AA> key. He says that every time he presses it, he gets the french AA> letter e with the l'accent augu. Pardon the spelling. He wants AA> the regular letter "e" back. What commands does he need to AA> accomplish that? I'm not sure if simple commands will work. Besides trying out what you've already read or been told, another possibility exists that I haven't seen being brought up. It's possible that the Mac in question has been "hacked" to map the "e" key to the French version. It may be that the previous owner(s) of the system may have done so because they needed to have fast access to that particular character. I've never remapped keys on my Mac, but others have done so. Unfortunately, I don't know the names of any programs/hacks/applications that may have permanently altered the keyboard map file. It may have even been done by someone tweaking the file itself. Please find out what OS level this Mac is running. I may be able to scrounge up the original keyboard mapping file for US English from some of the various OS discs I have lying around (OS 8.6, 9.0.4, 9.1, 9.2, 10.0.0, 10.1, 10.2). You can try reenabling the US English keyboard setup via the Mac's Control Panels, but if the French "e" doesn't disappear, my bet's on the possibility that the keyboard file itself has been tampered with. Let me know. Regards, Steve ... Computer Hacker wanted.
