on ubuntu it is pretty simple...

sudo apt-get install libjpeg-dev libsnmp-dev libcups2-dev libusb-dev
python-dev libsane-dev libcupsimage2-dev

the above is all on one line...

then the hplip source package is put in the same way... when i installed
the hplip stuff, i downloaded it and there was a script with it or it was a
self installing thing... i ran whatever it was which then ran thru the
compiling process and put everything in the proper place after which it
just worked... that was a couple of ubuntus ago... i'm still on ubuntu 10
on most of my machines and have a couple that are still ubuntu 8...
