subject: USR Courier???

-= Pete Replied to Paul Edwards about: USR Courier??? =-

G'day Paul

PC> If by saying "one V32bis modem" you mean the Supra could it not
PC> be the Supra at fault, BTW is the Supra based on the Rockwell
 PC> V32bis chip.

PE> For sure, I didn't make a statement one way or the other about
PE> who, if anyone, was violating protocol.

IMH One of the problems with v32ter is it wasn't used widely enough to
draw any conclusions as to who's implementation was or wasn't in spec.

PE> I don't know. I do know that it can be worked around on the USR
PE> side though, because I can use another modem here and it works.
PE> And in fact, they have already created the workaround - disable
 PE> V32terbo on the USR. Since I don't have another V32terbo modem
PE> available, I can't tell whether the USR could provide a better
PE> workaround than simply disabling V32terbo.

the USR does seem to have a large number of S reg switches to turn
quite a few options on or off.

PE> Actually, my Thunder was V32terbo, but it was even WORSE than
PE> the Courier, so the Courier is still the best V32terbo
PE> implementation I have used. Note that I am STILL not saying
PE> that the Courier is in any way violating the V32bis or V32terbo
PE> protocols at all, or even that they have a lousy implementation
 PE> of them.

as i mentioned above, there wasn't enough v.32ter modems around to
draw any conclusions.

PE> Oh, and yes, the Supra is a Rockwell V32bis, just like the Maestro.

fair enough, i don't know much about Supra's at all.

PC> BTW Hows the M34F performing so far, i'm using an M11F on my
PC> mailer here and it gives me no problems apart from calling a
PC> system on very bad lines where i only get a 4800 connect, oddly
PC> enough the USR will get 16800 connects to that system.

PE> It's FAR WORSE than the Courier. Mainly because a Maestro SE
PE> 9600 can't connect to it at 9600. A secondary problem is the

 PE> No change on this.

PE> failure of a USR Sportster to connect with EC on 50% of times.

PE> The Courier is able to work around this problem by forcing a
PE> lower maximum V.34 rate of 26400 or something (still to be
 PE> determined).

maybe the Sportster owner would be advised to force 26400 as the
starting point, a 26400 EC would be more desirable than 28800 with no
EC. That's more or less what i'm doing with the system that i
mentioned above where i only get 4800, it's a local call and if i
allow the modem to select it's own speed starting at 28800 it usually
takes 3 to 4 attempts to get an EC connect which adds up to around $1
for the mail poll but starting at a lower speed i get 4800 EC 1st time
every time.

PC> How are your phone lines, have you ever had them checked out.

PE> They were checked out once. The technician was not impressed
PE> that I had called him out on the basis of my modem's MR light
PE> flashing. That was 2 years ago. BFN. Paul.

no doubt not a good reason to use for a service call.
