Hi! Tom, On Mon, 15 Apr 13, you wrote to me: TW> Somehow I got Puppy Linux installed on a 16 Gig Thumb drive and it TW> almost works. I git several other programs in the repository TW> installed and the only glitch is it will not print. My history with linux printing is pitiful. Like you, I don't recall ever being able to get it work. My single success was setting up the PDF printer on the LAN. Of course it is not a physical device, but I did have some excellent drivers & documentation to guide me in Puppy (still have, BTW). TW> It recognizes the Printer by model number but when I try to print a TW> test page it acts like it is printing but nothing comes out of the TW> printer. Is that through CUPS or some other management/spooling software? Try something wild, and see what happens when you browse in Puppy to [ http://localhost:631 ], in either Firefox or the Seamonkey fall-back. The printer may only need to be turned on there to start working. TW> Writing the changes make to the USB device sure slows down the TW> shutdown though. Yep, it's a pain. The whole operation does get faster with each boot & shutdown but that's probably still the slowest part of the deal. But 'it takes as long as it takes', so, I usually let a shutdown just take its own time. TW> I have two otther Live USB drive Linux devices, Kubuntu and Mint TW> Linux but so far like Puppy Linux best. Part of my KISS(Keep it TW> Simple Stupid) mentility?? T'ain't nothin' wrong with that thinking. I like it simple too. That's why I've hung on to the old Puppy 4.12 _installed_ on three vBoxes. I do have .iso files for v5.2.5 & v5.2.8 as well as v4.12, for fun, in a generic 'test' vBox. It's also used for very occasional playtime with U'u or X'u 12.04 LTS .iso files. But, I've stayed with v4.12 since it addresses the KISS principle. Oh, and it does have a full 'development environment' configured from mounted .SFS files in the Puppy vBox; I can compile, 'configure', or 'make' other programs if I wish. :) TW> Since I have a Removable drive adapter for SATA drives I will be TW> instaling to a SATA drives later and swap drives to change the OS. TW> I have 4 160 Gig SATA drives set aside for that project Whoa, too much information. :) I have a few little 40-gig drives to play with but they're not used any longer since my movie collection has outgrown their usefulness (there's over 120 flicks in SD .mp4 format). (I've thrown out all the older drives smaller than 10-gigs. Winmodems and ancient CD drives are on the 'hit list', next.) I much prefer playing with vBoxes these days, rather than real hardware.
