Ok, i may seem like a fool but here goes.  Do you happen to have your mouse

the same IRQ?  Or do you have call waiting?  I am sorry if i am seeming a 
little obvious but those are my main two reasons for modem lag
Also, incorrect settings (jumpers) do that too
I've found that the best init string for 33.6's is simply ATZ, or AT&F - 
&F2
