In Europe a studio turntable is often a package that includes a line level 
output, and even cue/monitor amp.  In the US pro- TT's usually are just 
motors with platters, with mounting, arms, and electronics separate and up to 
the user.  Preamps with line outs (+4 balanced) are usually located just 
below the arm though.  
It's only in cheap home (and some semi-pro) systems that phono preamps are 
part of other electronics.  That assumes that the whole system won't be 
spread over more than a couple feet, and often compromises other design 
traits.
