KB>Hi there:-) Hodahafiz to you! Please don't stop posting code. It is
KB>what makes my monitoring of this Echo worth while. I had a big
KB>struggle locally to get this on line at DeepCove (You know of this
KB>BBS as you are local to me ). It is not that a lot of people
KB>use PBASIC here it seems.
Kevin:
Khodahafez means "bye" ;-)
Thanks to the fact that my favorite Fidonet BBS has a telnet link
allowing me to log on via the Internet, I am able to continue to post in
this echo without breaking my word to my wife that I will no longer be
using non-Internet resources. (It was a family time issue.) So, the
code will continue.
KB>In your FAQ it might be useful to point out the major
KB>differences in translating QuickBASIC code to PB32. I still find it
KB>hard to get some anwers on that in spite of many months of asking
KB>questions. I have been trying out a QB45 code generator and when
KB>trying to translate a lot of my Database Code I come up against
KB>compiler hangups etc.
That sounds like a VERY good idea for the first FAQ -- issues in
translating QB45/VBDOS/PDS to PowerBASIC.... That will be what I do
first. Thanks for the great suggestion.
KB>Any FAQ on that I would appreciate as there are BIG differences
KB>sometimes between QB45 and PB32 code.
Despite what they say in their publicity, there are many differences
that sometimes make ports a nightmare, you are right! But that doesn't
mean the switch is not worthwhile, to be certain! In fact, many of the
differences are so much for the better!
I have to date ported over 5000 lines of QB code to PB, so I think such
a FAQ based on my experience in this field would be useful to many.
I have written a REDIM_PRESERVE replacement, for instance, that accepts
arrays of many different types, and redimensions them very quickly
without losing their contents. This maintains almost 100% compatibility
between PDS/VBDOS and PowerBASIC 3.2 (just have to add the underscore
between the REDIM and the PRESERVE).
I am having an excruciating attack of gout right now, so the FAQ might
be a week or so in the making, but I'll be sure to post it here as soon
as I can walk again....
Thanks for your support and faith in me....
