-> Most teachers that I have come in contact with, do not look for
-> cheating in their classroom and when (or if) they ever catch it, they
-> aren't tough enough on the student. If you give room for error,
-> error will occur. Teachers need to punish cheaters and make them
-> realize that it is wrong.
I would have to concur with this.
While I suppose I have cheaters in my class too, I think less of it goes
on because the students know I watch for it. The teachers who don't look
for it...well it is rampant in those classrooms.
I have discussed with other teachers at my school before, whether to
write up a student with the dean's office for cheating. Most of them
think that on a first offense, they should "give the kid a chance" and
not write them up. I tell them that then there is no record in the
dean's office that this student has cheated before, and if they are
caught cheating in another class, THAT will look like a first offense,
when in fact it is not.
I refer students who cheat to the dean's office so that it goes in their
discipline file and we have it on record as their first offense. If they
are then caught cheating in other classes as well, this helps to
establish a pattern that would otherwise go unnoticed.
