I realize I'm stepping outside the lines here, so I should probably expect
some flaming; but here goes. Being a beginner here, I needed more feedback
on fine grinding so I tried an experiment.
I used a SiC wheel on a Dremel to grind channels on my [Pyrex] tool on 15
mm centers. I have stepped down in abrasive, using 3, 1, and 0.3 micron
alumina. The lens surface is convex, so I then used a
"mini-maglite", holding it next to my head to examine the tool
instead.
The problem is that the surface looks ugly. In the middle, there is a
section that is gray, even though I am able to mostly fill the tool with a
reflection. Mostly, though, this grayness seems to fall near the channels.
Am I just being impatient? Should I give it a few more wets to see if the
grayness goes away? Should I expect that the lens surface is just as bad
as the tool?
